Want to increase your website traffic?
Many people and businesses believe that traffic is just going to appear when they have a website built and activated. This is usually not the case. The accessibility of the internet has created this misnomer that “if you build it they will come”. There have been many aspiring online business people that have found out this reality the hard way. You can have a great looking site and a great product, and still have no online traffic. It takes work and patience to increase your website traffic.
All websites on the world wide web are unique. They each have a different URL address and in most cases offer different products, information and/or services. Even though there are differences, the one thing they have in common is traffic. Internet surfers can visit your site through many different portals that can usually be categorized under one of four online “entry-ways”:
1) Organic Search Traffic - results when a word or phrase is typed into a search engine or directory and the searcher selects a result of the query. There are no fees associated with organic search traffic once the website has been made search engine friendly. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a service that is underutilized by many website builders and owners because it is not well understood or they are just unaware that such a concept exists. Websites without basic SEO will have a poor search ranking, negatively effecting their websites potential traffic. SEO is an investment into your businesses website, the better your SEO the higher you will rank, driving more traffic to your website.
2) Site Linkage - is traffic generation from an affiliated site, through a link that website has referring to your site. It is only beneficial for your website to do this if your linked sites are not in direct competition with you. By working on this over time, you can build site linkage traffic that will pay off for increased traffic long term. Some of the more popular sites will charge a fee for site linkage or ask for a reciprocal link on your site. The advantage of site linkage is its low cost, while the disadvantages are that it can take some time to set up, expand, and keep current and some website owners prefer not to have reciprocal links.
3) Paid Traffic - can include any number of online marketing campaigns, such as Pay-Per-Click(PPC) advertising, banner advertising, and e-mail mailing campaign. These traffic generators are great for quick guarantee website traffic and you can spend as much as your budget allows. The drawbacks are they can be very expensive compared to your Return on Investment (ROI) and they only generate traffic for as long as you pay the fee(s).
4) Direct Traffic - is from internet surfers who clicked a bookmark to come to your site or typed your site URL into their browser. Direct traffic can include visitors recruited via offline (i.e. print, television) campaigns. Media campaigns are usually very expensive and they only generate traffic as long as you are advertising.
As you can see, there are many ways to increase your website’s traffic, but most of them take some work, some money and some patience. The only guarantee in website traffic is that if you do not do anything, the lack of effort will be reflected in the small amount of traffic to your website.

Tracking Your Website Traffic

You may have a custom-designed website that has been search engine optimized, good Pay-Per-Click, and a banner ad campaign in place. So why should you care about tracking your website traffic? One argument would be if you do not know where your traffic is coming from, your advertising budget is not being spent effectively and appropriately.
In reality, a small percentage of website owners, and managers actually track the traffic on their website. Some of the larger businesses may appear that they have an endless supply of funds for advertising, but every company, regardless of size, has a limited amount of money they can spend on advertising. With any limited advertising budget, maximizing the Return of Investment (ROI) is critical.
So how can website tracking maximize your ROI? The answer is simple. With the right tracking in place, the information available to the website owners is amazing. For example:
• location (city, country or continent) of the internet surfer
• times of day your site is being visited
• the connection speed and browser being used
• the specific pages they are surfing
• the number of pages they are surfing
• the length of time they are spending on your site
Information on unique and return visitors is also available, as well as the bounce rate(one page viewers) of your site. But, by far the most important information that tracking will identify is where your traffic is coming from.
With the proper tracking in place, it will tell you what site link your internet surfer used to visit your site. This will tell you whether that banner ad you are paying for is really bringing in an appropriate amount of traffic. Furthermore, it can tell you it may be time to make a change if you are sharing reciprocal links with another site and are not seeing any increased traffic. Since there are many ways to use all this information to stretch your advertising dollar, it really is invaluable. By knowing where your traffic originated, it tells you what method of advertising is working and what is not.
Good website tracking should give the website owner information on all the organic searches that brought visitors to their particular site. These are search queries that people used on search engines or directories that brought traffic to your site. It will tell you the exact search phrase or word used and on what search engine the query was made. This is very advantageous when it comes to Search Engine Optimization(SEO). Once you have collected enough tracking data, you will know what keywords and phrase are working the best and which are not, as well as which search engines you are popular on and the ones that do not know who you are.
For a reasonable price, many different tracking programs can be set-up on your website. Some have different information than others. C-Panel tracking stats are very industrial and not that user friendly, but they are usually free if you have C-Panel access. Analytics used to cost several hundreds of dollars a year, but since Google has taken them over, the service is now free as well. Google Analytics are much more user friendly and easy to set-up if you know a little bit about HTML. There may be a small fee to initially set-up your site with tracking, but once the code is established most tracking programs are free to use for as long as you need them.
It is certainly very beneficial to spend some time and effort in tracking what your website visitors are doing on your site. It will allow you to understand your website visitors and maximize your advertizing budget.

Choosing a reliable web host

After you must have decided on the purpose of your web site, researched keywords and marketing strategy, the next step is to find a suitable web host to host your site. Just as tenants rent an apartment, room or a house, you will need a space on the internet where your files would be stored. It is very important to choose your web host wisely as ideally you would not want to move from one web host to the other.
A lot of hosting packages are available on the web, and it can be a very daunting task deciding on which one to choose. As most first time web enthusiasts may not have an idea of what to look for, I hope to give you a head start to finding the host that is suitable for you and based on my experience and knowledge recommend hosts that I have either tried and tested or host that have good reports.
Some hosting sites like Moon fruit provide custom templates for you to design your site. Most of its features are drag and drop and anyone that can use the mouse can put a website together in no time. In fact, I hosted my first site with moon fruit, and at that time I was happy with what I was getting. But as time went on I realised that there were several limitations. You only have control over the the content of the site, which has its own limitation too. You have limited access to the meta tags, and you have to means of optimising your site for search engine ranking. I would recommend Moon Fruit for non web programmers delving into web design for fun without any commercial motive. This type of hosting is definitely not suitable for a commercial site of anyone serious about making money on the web.
For starters with a commercial motive, you would need a host that grants you full control of the site as well as databases, scripts, file management, emails, Ftp, etc. Most of these hosting sites come packaged with a lot of other programs which come handy. Some of the things you need to look out for are:
Bandwidth - also referred to as transfer.
It controls the number of pages requested by each visitor. The higher the bandwidth, the more visitors you can have on your site. If your site would be displaying a lot of graphics, the bandwidth should be your major concern.
Web Space
This is refering to the amount of disk space you are renting on the server.
In general, the size of the space being offered by most hosting sites are never fully use up. So do not be carried away with advertising offering extremely large web space, you may not need all of it.
Customer Service
On the onset, this may not be obvious to you, but you ideally should sign up with a host with good customer service. One that replies to your queries promptly. I would suggest that before you sign up, you request some information from the host and see how long it takes them to respond. It would be a fair indication of how they would respond to you when you have difficulties.
I am compiling a list of reliable web host that I would recommend based on the packages they offer, their promptness in dealing with queries and their customer service. You can view the current list here. I have had to change web host and the experience was not a smooth one. The host was reluctant to provide the information I required to switch to my new host obviously for commercial reason. I can not stress enough the importance of choosing a reliable web host the first time round.
I will keep updating this list so check back from time to time as we embark on this journey to our wealthy place, the place of more than enough and an early retirement.

What is MySQL?

The internet of today is cluttered with myriad ways to create and manage a website. With sites becoming larger and more complicated, it became necessary to move beyond simple html and into more complicated languages for creating attractive and functional websites. MySQL is a database that helps in this regard.
MySQL is an open source database system which uses Structured Query Language (SQL) to operate. Databases are extremely common because they allow for a central collection of data, be it posts to a blog, a database of members to a forum, or locations of files. What the database does is organize them in such a way that PHP (or other programming languages) can use the data to assemble a site. The MySQL database uses relationships to organize data, an efficient system that is both fast and reliable. While a few years ago most sites were composed of pages of html with all the data located on the individual page, today it is common to find large portions of the site stored in a MySQL database.
. However, just knowing what a MySQL database is does not grant one understanding of how or why to use one. MySQL is popular because it works well with all the major programming languages and can be installed on all the major operating systems. It is open source, so it is constantly undergoing improvement in operation and security, and is free if users follow the GNU General Public License. The most common reason to use MySQL is that it is required for many popular pieces of software operating on your web server. If you want access to these programs, you have to install MySQL. Because of the growth in popularity of sites built on and around more advanced applications, databases are becoming a necessity, and MySQL is well known as the biggest and by many is considered the best. As well, because a database takes care of organizing the site’s content, it is possible to change the site’s design without affecting its content.
Learning how to use MySQL is best done on a clean server, away from any important data that could be lost. Many servers already have MySQL installed by default, but you cannot assume. If your server does not have MySQL, you can download and install the software from MySQL AB the company which owns it. Once you know you have MySQL, its time to start exploring. MySQL AB provides an extremely detailed manual for their software, and it is the best starting point for new web administrators. It may turn out that in the course of day to day operations you don’t need most of these skills, but without them a small problem could become a very large one in the future.
Take time to learn as much about the systems that operate your website as possible. If you have an understanding of the basic system behind each piece of technology, it makes troubleshooting significantly easier. MySQL is just a part of a larger system, often called LAMP, or Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP. Find out what your server is using, whether it be Linux or Windows, Apache or Perl, and take the time to understand how and why it works the way it does.

Learn to Create a Web Form

Learn to Create a Web Form by acbuddy If you have a website, adding a simple web form to your site, such as a feedback form, contact form, or other web form, can be a tough task. Most programming novices create their first website using pre-developed templates and have no advanced knowledge of HTML programming. As a result, creating a simple form that can email the responses from the form to the webmaster can be a difficult and frustrating task.
If you just posted a new website, but you do not have a HTML email form uploaded and you need to quickly provide a way for your visitors to contact you, then you should simply post your email address on your Contact page. However, if you want to create a sophisticated online form to collect information from your visitors and respond to their questions, you need to know something about HTML and another programming language called PHP.
Installing the web form on your website is the easy part. If you are not familiar with how to create the code for a web form, there are many different online tutorials that can teach you how to create the code. After that, you will need to create a file that will process your form after someone fills it out and send the answers to you via email.
The code used to process a HTML form is often referred to as Formmail. Formmail is written in a programming language called PHP, which is more advanced than HTML. There are many websites where you can download the Formmail file for free. Formmail has been used to process and email the results of web forms since 1997.
When you download Formmail, make sure it has code that prevents spam from being sent through your HTML form. There are many different versions of Formmail floating around the internet, and some have built-in spam protection while others do not.
Many times, inexperienced programmers will put an online form on their website that does not include code to at least try to prevent spammers from utilizing the HTML email form to send spam to hundreds or even thousands of people. As a result, those who have been spammed complain to their internet service provider, who then directs the complaint to the hosting company that handles your website. This can be a huge problem.
If you do not have the patience to create your web form yourself, there are more than a few form creation services on the internet that provide a simple way for you to create a form without doing any programming. These third-party form creators usually do not provide you with the PHP code you need to process the form. Instead, they process it for you on their own servers.
If you are comfortable with programming, you might want to try to create your HTML email form yourself with the help of some online tutorials. If you do not have the patience to do the work, use an outside service that creates the web form for you. Either way, it is important to have an HTML form so that people can contact you directly through your website.

Yes You Can Find A Great Domain Name

Yes You Can Find A Great Domain Name by jschuman With the recent explosion in the availability of website domain name suffixes (such as .eu, .ws, .cc and so on) it's never been easier to find a domain name that is directly related to the theme of your website.
For example, if you want to create a site about baseball cards, it would make sense to use a domain name including the phrase baseballcard. Unfortunately, however, other people have had the same idea previously, so baseballcard is no longer available, nor is baseballcard, .org, .biz or any other simple domain name with a top level suffix.
Furthermore, it is a fact that most people who are searching on the net are going to give first priority to sites with top level domain names, such as a .com or a .net.
At least partially, this is simply a function of these being the original suffixes, and therefore the average surfer perhaps believes that they have more credibility and authority.
This is especially critical if your website is selling or promoting your business or products, as these factors translate into trustworthiness in this situation. Simply put, a top level domain name is one of your strongest sales tools.
Many people also belive that search engines will give weight to your domain name when considering your site for that all important search engine ranking. In this case, there needs to be some clear relationship between your domain name and site subject, to give you any chance of featuring when people search using Google or Yahoo.
So, what can you do? Well, here's a couple of very simple tips that may help you to bag that all important top level domain name for your site.
First, try a plural version of your key phrase, rather than the singular version. So, in the example above, you might check out the availability of top level names using baseballcards, rather than baseballcard.
Truth be told, however, used on its own, this tactic is a bit too obvious, and more often than not, when the singular version of a phrase has gone, then so has the plural.
The second little trick is, however, far more effective and well worth trying if you are looking for a top level name for your site. The trick is - numbers!
Not numbers at the beginning of the domain address - that's really old hat and you only have to look at a list of expired domains to see how many owners of such addresses just allow them to die. Why? Because they don't work particularly well with either search engines or with real people - and something like 0000baseballcards.com just looks plain silly!
So, that's not likely to be of much benefit to your site. But, numbers in the body of the domain name itself, especially the numbers 2 and 4, very possibly will be.
Why? Well, the number 2 is a simple substitute for the word "to" and 4 can be read as for.
Now, tie that in with one other little substitution trick - take the word you and substitute the letter u - and finding a good top level domain name that still relates very closely to the site subject matter becomes a relatively simple matter.
Let's take our baseballcards example to demonstrate how effective a strategy this can be. Using all three of the highlighted tricks, try searching for baseballcards2u.com" and baseballcards4u.com. Still available? If not, how about baseballcards4us.com or baseballcard4me.com?
Even if all of these are now taken, all it needs is a bit of imagination to create a .com domain name that relates directly to your subject matter.
A simple but effective method of grabbing a top level domain name for your site.

Get On The Internet

Get On The Internet by kevin03 The internet is proving to be a substantial venue for promoting products. If you have a retail outlet having a web site can be an extension of your store. With our buzy lifestyles and dual income families, it can be easier for many people to simply go on line and make their purchases. This saves time and gas. If you have a store it would be prudent of you to have a web presence.
When customers come into your store capture their email address. You could have a form they fill out with a check box that they check off permitting you to send them a newsletter or sale notification. A large database of clients can be built by doing just this one thing. By having a web site and regularly sending out newsletters you keep your name in front of the client at all times. When they need a product you sell, they will most likely think of your store, as you are always reminding them of your presence.
Offer your database a special discount now and then for email subscribers only. Write an article of interest you think your clientele would be interested in, ie; if you sell golf clubs research and write an article on how to improve their golf swing, or if you have a dress shop write an article on what the next seasons colours will be. This will keep your site sticky (people will want to come back often as they get good information when visiting your site).
If you feel you have no writing skills you can search for elance using google and very reasonably hire a writer who can write small articles for you. Your return on investment would be worth it. Always update your site with new articles, new products and sales on a regular basis. Fresh content added often will keep your site high up on the search engines.
You can easily find software today that makes it easy for you to create a web site. Just visit your local software retailer and you will find many ideas for web site creation software. It is quite inexpensive as well. HTML knowledge is not a prerequisite for creating a web site. You can find software now that lets you simply follow a template in a WYSIWYG editor. This stands for "what you see is what you get". If this is intimidating you can hire a web site designer. They are relatively inexpensive, depending on what type and how extensive your site is.
Make sure when you choose a domain name you give this a lot of thought. It is better to have the keyword that describes your product in your domain name, than something totally unrelated. The search engines will find you easier.
Once you have your site, it needs to be registered with the search engines or directories. This can be done manually or you can pay someone to do it. Common search engines are Google, Yahoo, Msn, Lycos, etc. Web shoppers use search engines when they are looking for specific information or products.
It is better to get a web site hosted by a company that you pay a monthly fee for rather than use a free one, as they can have a lot of advertising on your site, which doesn't look professional. Just Google hosting companies and you will find a large number available.
There are a many excellent books in book stores that teach you all about marketing on the web. It is worth the read as it is very competitive out there. Knowledge is a definite plus! Good Luck!

Web Hosting Features To Look For by kevin03 When you are looking for a professional web hosting service, you want to look for certain features and services. Do not worry about knowing exactly what all the technical terms mean, just look for them! You should always shop around, phone the hosting companies and ask questions as part of your qualification process.
1. Reliability and Speed
Look for a hosting service that owns their own equipment, with high-speed connections to multiple Internet backbones, backup power generators and backup systems in place. The hosting company will generally brag about their high-speed connections and will usually guarantee 99% or better availability of your web site.
Many hosting services are operated by resellers. This can be a good thing if they bring better and more knowledgeable support to their resold services. Unfortunately, many resellers do not really have the resources or knowledge to adequately support you.
Years in business are something you should take a look at. Three years or more is a pretty good yardstick of reliability.
If they offer a trial period, take advantage of it and actually try the service out.
2. Operating Systems
Do they use a standard operating system configuration that they keep updated on a routine basis? If they do not, you may have trouble getting newer scripts to work. On Linux servers, look for Red Hat, Mandrake, Debian, SuSE, Slackware and CentOS. On Windows servers, look for recent Windows operating systems with all patches kept current. If they do not publish this information, email or phone them to find out.
3. Language and Database Support
They should support the key programming languages and databases that are used by newer scripts and should keep these up to date as well. On Linux you should look for PHP and Perl at the least. For a database, look for MySQL. You should be allowed at least one database. You should have your own CGI Bin. On Windows systems, look for MS Access at the least and MS SQL Server for power and speed. If you want to use the Microsoft NET framework, your hosting will need to support that.
4. Support
Check their support. The minimum support is email support. The better hosting services provide 24/7 email, ticket system and live telephone support. Actually try their support and see if they respond quickly enough for your needs and if their support staff is helpful and knowledgeable.
5. FTP Access
Many inexpensive hosting services do not provide FTP access. You will need FTP access if you plan to add much material to your website or if you need to install scripts on your website. Also check that you can change permissions on your files via FTP or through SSH.
6. Email
How many email accounts do they provide? Are they POP email accounts? Can you add forwarders and email aliases? Look for web mail access as well. The better the service, the more options they will provide for email.
7. User Control Panel
Look for a comprehensive user control panel that allows you to manage your hosting account. The better control panels also provide automatic script installers like Fantastico or Elefante. Cpanel, Ensim and HSphere and Plesk are all well known and well supported. There are many more control panels than these and they are good too, but you should probably check them more thoroughly and take a look at their demo system if they have one.
8. Domain Names
You should be able to host at least one domain name. The better hosting companies will generally allow you five or more domain names. There should be no restrictions on sub-domains.
9. Statistics
Does your hosting service include a statistics program so you can monitor your website traffic?
10. Disk Space
The absolute minimum is 50 MB, but you should be paying very low prices for that little disk space.
11. Bandwidth
The main difference between the basic and expensive plans of any hosting service is the amount of bandwidth allowed per month.
To figure how much bandwidth you need, multiply your visits per day X page views per visit X average page size X 30 days.
Example: 100 visits per day, 5 page views per visit, with a page size of 45 kb: 100 X 5 X 45 KB X 30 = 675,000 KB = 675 MB.
Try to get as much bandwidth for your dollar as possible, but beware of web hosting services that offer unlimited bandwidth. Read the fine print and their terms of use carefully. There is usually some kind of restriction that you will need to be aware of.
Make sure you read up on how they charge you if you exceed your monthly bandwidth and what upgrades they have available.
12. eCommerce
If you plan to run a shopping cart or secure payments or data transfers on your website, you need to make sure that the hosting service supports SSL.
Some Closing Thoughts:
Typical prices for professional level hosting range between $6.99 and $45.00 per month for a reasonable level of disk space and bandwidth on shared hosting. Below that you are asking for trouble because they probably do not make enough money to adequately support their equipment, systems or you.
Windows servers are usually more expensive than Linux servers because the Windows operating systems are not open source. The hosting company has to pay for using them.
When you are comparing plans, keep in mind that you are getting a better deal at $25 per month for eight domain names than $10 per month for one.
When you are looking for hosting don't be afraid to ask questions. Good hosting services have no problem directing you to helpful information or answering your questions in a way that you can understand.

How to Make a Painless Move to a New Web Host by kevin03 There are two things that can go seriously wrong when you move to a new web hosting provider. Follow this simple guide to doing it all without too many dramas.
A normal move to a new hosting provider can mean huge losses to your business if things aren't done correctly. Specifically:
1. Your new web site doesn't "behave" the way it should.
2. Your email goes "missing" for several days
Setting Up The New Server
Setting up the new server correctly easily solves the first problem.
Set up the new server with your existing/main domain name details (but do not change the DNS settings - yet).
Once the server is set up, you can then park another/spare domain name at the same server.
For example, most servers with cPanel allow you to easily park one - or more - domains on top of an existing one. If you don't happen to have a spare/unused domain name you can use for this purpose, it won't cost much to register a new .com just for this purpose.
Now, make sure that the DNS information for the parked domain at your domain name registry points to the new server.
Once you can see your web site under the parrkeddomainname.com address in your web browser, fully test it to make sure all the interactive routines - i.e. search routines, contact forms, forums, feeds, etc., work as they should.
Once you are 100% certain that it works properly, and you've got your email sorted out (see next bit) then you can organize to have the DNS for your main domain name changed to point to the new server.
Big Tip: Make a small change to the new home page so you can easily tell which site (old or new) you are looking at in your web browser. When you can see the change, it means your DNS has been updated.
Don't Lose Any Email
The problem with a DNS change is that it can take some time to go through - up to 72 hours or even longer for it to propagate across the whole Internet.
During that time, some of your customers will be seeing the old version of your site, and if they send you email, it can be delivered to the old server.
And you might not be able to check it because your ISP has updated the DNS and you can only see the new server.
At The Old Server, simply set up a forward or redirection to send all your mail to your existing ISP email account, or perhaps even a new Hotmail type address.
For the final time, in Outlook (or whatever email client you use) click on Send/Receive to get any mail that might be waiting on the old server. After this new email (to your old server) will come in through your ISP email box.
Next, set up your email accounts At The New Server. You should also set up redirects here to send any mail it receives to your ISP address. That way, if you're unlucky and your DNS takes forever to propagate, you will still get your new email.
Finally, when you are all ready to go, lodge the DNS change with your domain name registrar to point your main domain to the new server.
While The DNS Is Updating
If everything's been set up correctly, then while the DNS is updating, several things will happen:
1. Any email being sent to the old server will be redirected to your ISP email address.
2. Any email that's sent to the new server is also being redirected to your ISP address, so you won't lose any email during this period.
3. Your email client should keep checking the old server until the DNS change goes through. When that happens, it will most likely display an "unable to connect" error message.
4. Now, check to make sure you can see your new server in your web browser.
5. If you can, then change your email settings to the new server settings and check it works both sending and receiving.
6. Now remove the redirections from the new server.
Finally, in about another week or so, contact your OLD hosting provider and Close Your Account. It's an important step, but so many people forget to do it, until they get re-billed for another month (and lot's of luck trying to get a refund).
